Movie Review 'Boss': Time to stop 'south remakes'

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Aditi Rao Hydari, Ronit Roy, Shiv Pandit, Danny Denzongpa, Mithun Chakraborty, Govind Namdeo, Sanjai Mishra, Johny Lever, Parikshit Sahni

Director: Anthony D'Souza

The Indian Express rating: *1/2

Within a few minutes of the opening, I knew this is one of those flicks you can watch with your ears. Dhadaak, khachhaak, crrruunch, thapppadd, dhachhaak. And krrrrich, bhadaang, dhadaam. And when Boss aka Akshay Kumar decides to take a break from pulverizing bones and flashing cleavers and blowing up cars, it becomes dhinchak, dhinchak, dhinchaaak! The soundtrack is a faithful raconteur of the Boss's (Kumar) exploits in his turn as a rowdy from Haryana, in another 'South remake' after Rowdy Rathore. For a minute I thought I was back in Rathore land, because there were Sonakshi and Prabhudeva shaking a leg with Akshay. For all intents and purposes, this could be called Rowdy 2, because Akshay does exactly what he does in that earlier film, but with different co-stars, and a plot that is totally subservient to labelling him Boss every two minutes.

In a long flashback, we are told that the Boss wasn't always thus. He was once a good lad who once lived in a place called Dharamkunj Gaon, whose father was a Gandhian schoolteacher named Satyakant (Chakraborty), and his younger brother was called Shiva (Pandit). "Marr gaya mere liye tu," thunders his righteous father, after an incident in which a young boy is killed. I waited for the follow-up - "door ho ja meri nazron ke saamne se", but alas, that one was not included.

We then move back to the present where we find Boss, the protégé of good-hearted-goon Tauji (Denzongpa), up against bad cop (Roy, good actor getting typecast) and greedy politician (Namdeo). The slate is set for the bringing together of the long-lost-but-now-discovered chhota bhai and his (the younger brother's) curvy girl-friend (Hydari, who seems to have been hired solely for the rising-out-of-a-pool-in-bikini money shot), and estranged father and uncle (Sahni, looking lost). At each point Akshay arrives to save the day, and breaks a few bones while he is at it, all the while togged out in long kurtas and jeans and tightly-razored hair, parted in the middle.

6 diet tips to lose belly fat

6 diet tips to lose belly fat
A bloated stomach can invite many health-related problems. Cutting down on salt intake and focusing on a potassium-rich fibre diet can help in getting a flat stomach, says an expert.

A new book by Robynne Chutkan, a gastroenterologist and founder of the Digestive Centre for Women in Washington D.C., suggests that women have a tendency to bloat more than men mainly because they have longer intestines.

Chutkan says that there are major differences between the male and female digestive tracts. So, to shrink the stomach size, a few precautions must be taken, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

Cut down salt: Too much salt in the diet contributes to edema and bloating. Stick to the recommended 1500 mg of salt intake a day. Don't put salt on the table to add to your dinner and limit the amount whilst cooking. Avoiding ready meals is a must too as these are laden with salt for flavour. (Read: )

Eat more fibre: Eating a combination of soluble and insoluble fibre is an effective way to stay fit and avoid the bloated feeling that comes with constipation. Foods that are rich in fibre include oranges, mushrooms, raspberries, broccoli and cabbage. (Read: )

Focus on potassium-rich foods: As sodium makes body retain water, potassium helps it to get rid of excess water. Eating potassium-rich foods like bananas and sweet potatoes can help minimise your middle waist. But make sure to exercise right as these can be fattening too.

Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water ensures that fibre can do its job to ease constipation too. Not drinking enough water can also aggravate your sodium and potassium levels. (Read: )

Avoid digestive stress: Stay away from foods that are difficult to digest like sugary or fatty foods. Focus instead on simple meals which are made with whole foods and steamed vegetables to heal the digestive system.

Ditch artificial sweeteners: Found in flavoured water, diet, low-carbs and sugar-free foods, artificial sweeteners aren't completely digested by body. Bacteria in the large intestine tend to ferment them, causing gas and bloating. Always check food labels to avoid sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol and lacitol. (Read: )

Ready-made diet snacks – healthy or a marketing gimmick?

Ready-made diet snacks – healthy or a marketing gimmick?

From baked wafers to healthy biscuits, from diet bhel to low-cal sweets, these days, there are a number of 'healthy' products found in supermarkets. While they all claim to be good for your health and better than their fried or sugar-loaded counterparts, we wonder if this really is the case. In our quest to find the truth we ask our expert nutritionists to shed some light on the matter. Here's what they have to say.

How healthy are the so-called health food products sold in the market?

According to Neha Chandna , most of the foods sold in the health foods section are not necessarily healthy. Very few of them are genuine, rest all of them are loaded with excess fat, salt and preservatives which are not healthy in the real sense. Many manufacturers market their products as healthy, low-fat, diet, etc but don't really mention the amount of fat or the procedure used by them to make their products healthy. Majority of such foods are a marketing gimmick. The fact remains that to make their products yummy and attractive they use the same amount of fat in the dough and then bake or roast these instead of frying them making you consume the same amount of fat like you would in the fried versions. (Read: )

What should one look for in a food label?

These products contain a lot of fat, salt and artificial ingredients, you need to carefully check the amount of fat, sodium, sugar per serving and also for ingredients which you may be allergic to.

How can a layman decide if the said food is good or not?

It's simple, look into your fitness goals and what you want to achieve out of your body. If you are obese or diabetic, buy products with less fat and sugar, if you are hypertensive, buy products with less sodium.

Which foods should one definitely avoid?

Avoid cream biscuits, high-fibre biscuits with a lot of fat, baked chaklis, roasted khakras and chivdas, bakes puris or any other items which are marketed heavily as baked or roasted.

Can readymade foods ever be healthy? If yes, how to choose the right one?

Ready-made foods can be made healthy if the food manufacturer designs the products keeping the health of the consumers in mind without compromising on the taste. Exceptions exist, so you need to check the food label to pick the genuine ones and judge what you eat by your sense of taste. (Read: )

In order to make this simpler,  gives us some pointers to choose the right products off the shelves of supermarkets.

Before you choose a product, check the whole wheat and white flour (maida) ratio. Also, the kind of oil used and the content of fat.

Packaged foods available contain a lot of sodium which is different from salt. They usually mention the sodium content on the label, in order to get the salt content, multiply 2.5 to that figure and see how high it is.

The sugar-free/ low-cal sweets available contain artificial sweetness which can be harmful in the long run. Another problem with sugar-free products is that they contain a lot of white flour as well as fats. The only safe artificial sweetener is sucralose so look for one made of that. Even natural sugar products like honey, dates and granola bars contain a lot of calories and fat.

Many packaged foods contain Omega 6 in excess which destroys Omega 3 which is healthy for your heart so look up the label before you buy. (Read: )

Here's a list of products which are relatively healthy:

Skimmed milkPlain yogurtOatsPlain and flavoured almonds, pistachio, cashewDry fruits like prunes, figs, apricots, dates, raisinsPuffed rice (kurmara)Corn kernelsPlain or lightly salted popcornWhole grain breadLavash Seeds of sunflower, pumpkin, sesame and flax seedsHummusLow-fat paneerRoasted Bengal gram (chana)Organic honeyChikkis made of jaggery (gur)Potato wafers roasted and preferably made with rock salt and no oil Dry  fruit  sweets made  with  no  added  sugar  and  the  fat  is  from  nuts  and  seeds

Now that you know the truth, read the label carefully before choosing a snack and don't just go by the claims of its marketers. Healthy snacking!

Why is India refusing to sign the UN resolution against child marriage?

Why is India refusing to sign the UN resolution against child marriage?

We've let down our girls again. India refused to sign the first-ever global resolution on early and forced marriage of children led by the UN. The resolution was supported by 107 countries including the likes of Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sierra Leone and Yemen – countries with high rates of child marriage.

The resolution as floated by the UN Human Rights Council and stressed the need to include child, early and forced marriage in post-2015 international development agenda and acknowledged the impact of early marriage on the 'economic, legal, health and social status of women and girls' as well as 'the development of the community as a whole'.

Why India would refuse to sign the resolution is mind-boggling considering we have the highest number of child brides in the world – 24 million representing almost 40% of the 60 million of the world's child marriages.

Lakshmi Sundaram, the global coordinator of Girls Not Brides who was at the UN general assembly had told TOI: 'India refusing to sign the resolution is highly disappointing. Though India is putting in place a national plan to combat child marriages, it was strange why it did not stand up against the social ill in the international stage. India would have given out a positive signal that it is willing to find a solution by signing the resolution'. Sundaram added: 'Child marriage is a social ill across south Asian countries. However, Nepal probably is the only country that signed the resolution. Both India and Bangladesh which have high rates of child marriages didn't sign in. It a setback globally to the cause that India didn't speak out'. The Centre for Reproductive Rights says governments in the South Asia region have failed to enact and enforce adequate laws that prohibit child marriage. 'The practice persists with impunity. In South Asia, 46% of women between ages 20-24 report having been married before age 18 in 2010. This translated to 24.4 million women in the region. Estimates project that from 2010 to 2030, 130 million more girls in the region will be married.' (Read: )

'Child marriage does not constitute a single rights violation – rather, every instance of child marriage triggers a continuum of violations that continues throughout a girl's life. Child marriage endangers the survival and well-being of women and girls by exposing them to forced initiation into sex and sexual violence as well as to early, unplanned and frequent pregnancies. Further, women and girls married as children are often denied educational opportunities, are isolated from society and face a lifetime of economic dependence,' the Centre said. Currently the limit child marriage limit is 18 years but it's not followed vehemently.

Child marriage – a nation's shame

The culture of child marriage is without a doubt one of the greatest drawbacks of our conservative culture. It's simply wrong to force matrimony upon children who aren't old enough to understand the implications of marriage. But then we aren't a nation which seems very bothered about the daughters of our soil and we often equate women's liberty with immorality. Other than that, child brides often face adolescent pregnancies which has a host of other implications.

It's estimated that four million girls between the ages of 15-19 give birth in India every year and pregnancies in that age are riddled with complications because the female body while capable of it, isn't ready for the rigours of childbirth. (Read: )

Here are some of the common issues that riddle adolescent mothers-to-be and their unborn babies:

Hypertension : They have a higher risk of suffering from hypertension during pregnancy than women in their 20s and 30s. They're also likelier to suffer from pre-eclampsia (What is ?). In pregnant women (including teens), hypertension can lead to a serious condition called preeclampsia where women start passing protein in their urine. This leads to the disease called eclampsia which is characterised by seizures and a coma. This condition also affects other vital organs like the kidneys, liver and brain.

Anaemia: Caused due to lack of red blood cells which is usually due to nutrition deficiency like iron, vitamin B12, folic acid. The most common form is anaemia. Even women who're older experience iron deficiency during pregnancy. (Read: )

Postpartum haemorrhage: The term refers to a haemorrhage (bleeding) after delivering and is quite common among adolescent mothers. It's caused due to the four Ts:

Tone: Uterine atony or the inability of the uterus to contract leading to continuous bleeding.Trauma: From delivery which causes tear of tissues and vessels.Tissue: Retention of tissue from the placenta or foetus which leads to bleeding.Thrombin: Failure of clotting

Premature birth: This has a host of complications including neonatal mortality (death within the first month) developmental disorders, respiratory complications, vision problems and heart-related issues. They're also likelier to have a low-birth weight which is linked to neurological problems. They also suffer from hypoglycaemia (less glucose in the bloodstream).

STDs: The chances of contracting sexually transmitted diseases including HIV is much higher in adolescent girls because they have less say in who their sexual partner is, particularly in an orthodox country like ours. Many of them are married to men who they've never met before and have no clue about their sexual history.

All in all adolescent pregnancies are a big menace and we need to curb the practice to safeguard the lives of our daughters, so that they too can live a completely fulfilling life. (Read: )

Revealed – 10 secrets of people who lose weight easily!

Revealed – 10 secrets of people who lose weight easily!

You might have often heard people say, 'My friend eats more than me but while she doesn't put on any weight, I seem to pile on the pounds quite easily.' The answer to this question lies in our metabolism rate. Simply put, metabolism rate is the rate at which our body burns calories.

Why do we need to boost our metabolism?

'The faster our metabolism runs, the more calories we burn. Eating several small meals a day has been known to speed up metabolism. For the same reason, food has great importance in raising or lowering metabolic rate,' Tanuja Sodhi, nutritionist at pro parenting online community www.parentune.com told IANS.

Here's a list of food items to boost your metabolism:

-Broccoli: The green vegetable contains high amounts of calcium, which increases the metabolic rate of the body and help burn fat. (Read: 8 Indian substitutes for imported vegetables that could save you money)

– Spinach: Also called as Palak, it is a good source of various nutrients like vitamin C, magnesium, potassium and iron. Vitamin C in spinach helps raise metabolic  function.

– Capsicum: Known in India as shimla mirch, the chemical capsaicin in capsicum or bell peppers is an effective metabolic booster. When we eat it, our body temporarily releases stress hormones that speed up our metabolism. This burns more calories as the body tries to cope with the spicy flavour.

– Beans: Beans are high in both protein and fibre. While protein helps build and maintain muscle mass that helps raise the metabolic rate; fibre too perks up the metabolic rate because the body takes a long time to break it down.

-Grapefruit: Grapefruit is a source of many nutrients and phytochemicals that add to a healthy diet. It has a very low glycemic index which makes the fruit help the body's metabolism and burn excess fat. It also helps in controlling cholesterol and possesses antioxidant properties.

-Oatmeal: Oats are a rich source of fibre – both soluble and insoluble ones. These help in regulating bowel movements and prevent constipation. They are also a good option for people who want to lose weight as they can boost your metabolism. The fibres present in oatmeal make you feel full for longer and you end up eating less. (Read: 5 reasons to start eating oats today)

-Green Tea: Green tea has many ingredients in it such as caffeine, theobromine, saponins, theophylline, vitamins and epigallocatechin. The compound Epigallocatechin (EGCG) boosts your metabolic rate and reduces your appetite. (Read: 10 ways green tea keeps you healthy and fit!)

-Tofu: Made from curdled soybean milk, tofu is pale white in colour and resembles little blocks of paneer. It contains isoflavones that reduce bad cholesterol levels in our body thus preventing cardiovascular diseases. Tofu is also an excellent source of iron which helps in the making of haemoglobin. What more? It is a great option for someone trying to lose weight, as it increases your metabolism. (Read: 4 reasons why you should eat tofu)

-Ginger: It helps in digestion, but it also has a thermic effect by raising the body's internal temperature, meaning it expends more energy. Ginger, known in India as adrak also has cholesterol lowering properties, so can help improve cardiovascular health, as well as speeding up the metabolism. (Read: 10 health benefits of ginger)

-Chillies: Experts say eating chillies or mirchi can help burn energy, hours after a meal. It's also been suggested eating spicy food may temporarily suppress the appetite. However, be wary of eating too many chillies as it can cause digestion problems.

Three in one

The famed Parisian chain Buddha Bar, known for its spectacular interiors and lounge, makes its first appearance in India as b-bar. Located on the fourth floor of Select Citywalk Saket, b-bar is all about style and opulence. Out of the spacious 25,000 square foot area, 15,000 square feet with around 330 covers are dedicated to the restaurant. The interiors are classy with elegant chandeliers and red and gold ambience. The only thing missing is the trademark Buddha statue. Well, the controversy at their Jakarta restaurant has forced the owners to play it safe in India and replace it with a king size Samurai statue. Music is emphasised a lot at b-bar. They have their own Buddha Bar volume which remains uniform across all Buddha Bars. The lounge beats gets pacier as the clock strikes 10 and the party animals start to drop in. Mesmerised by the glamour quotient of b-bar I nearly forgot I was supposed to review the food.

The cuisine on offer is mainly drawn from the Southeast Asian region with Japanese food dominating the menu. I started with the lobster dumplings stuffed with mince of lobster and scallops. Shallow frying just before serving made the dumplings crunchy which went well with the crab curry sauce.

For vegetarians their sesame tofu is definitely one of the best offerings. No Japanese meal is considered complete without the sushi. I had a salmon and avocado variant and was quite impressed with it. The yakitori chicken was average as it was too chewy in texture. I started the main course with the signature b-bar noodles which the manager emphasised are served with the same flavours across the globe. Though the commitment made reflected a stiff collar, the noodles were average. I had the dish along with roasted black cod which was made well enough, but the balance of the soy maple vinaigrette was not perfect. It tasted way too much sweeter than it ought to. Angry chicken complemented the fried rice.

Among desserts, the frozen Japanese cream with mango jelly had a great aftertaste. Looking for the dish which would confirm a second visit, I found it in - the yuzu parfait with miso ice cream.

Meal for two - Rs.3000
